Any exploration or expedition to the Alaskan Wilderness during the Gold Rush was a dangerous encounter. The trails offered risky paths that were narrow, steep and uneven. The Chilkoot Pass has a staircase that was over 20 miles long, also the Chilkoot Pass was the site of the Palm Sunday Avalanche which killed 65 stampeders. The Valdez and White Pass trail were dangerous in their accessibility. The narrowest part of the trails only stretching 2 feet wide, making it difficult for stampeders to pass by. Besides the dangers that trails offered, Miners and prospectors encountered many other life-threatening situations along their expedition. With a high chances of death and low chances of success, miners faced the question whether or not it was truly worth going to Alaska.
